Hello Wednesday.

August 10 2022

Tech bootcamps for new skills 💻

Did you know? Employment in the tech industry is expected to grow ~13% over the next decade — adding 660,000+ jobs to the US labor force. Enter: Flatiron School, designed to help prospective students prepare for careers in tech (like software engineer or cybersecurity analyst).

Whether you’re a new student just starting out or want to revamp your resume to get a boost in your career, Flatiron School offers multiple (and affordable) options to fit everyone’s unique lifestyle. Read: You or your adult kids could learn the skills needed for a high-paying tech job at significantly less cost than a traditional college tuition.

Bootcamp curriculums are up to date with current industry trends, so students gain knowledge + experience they can use in the real world. | Photo provided by Flatiron School

How it works:

Students can choose between full-time or part-time courses that will help build skills necessary for a new job in tech. While both options are available online, Flatiron also has Denver, CO + New York City campuses for in-person courses.

To see if Flatiron is a good fit, prospective students can chat with admissions virtually. | Photo provided by Flatiron School

Flatiron School offers bootcamps in software engineering, data science, product design, and cybersecurity engineering in two formats:

  • Full-Time: Learn on a fixed schedule, roughly eight hours a day, Monday to Friday, in as little as 15 weeks.
  • Part-Time: Learn on your own schedule over 40 weeks.

So, you can select which pace fits your learning style + schedule.

Bonus: Students gain real-world experience through hands-on projects that can help build their professional portfolios.

Flatiron also offers graduates up to 180 days of one-on-one career coaching to help students succeed during their job search. Career coaches review resumes, help build a student’s online presence, and can even help practice interviewing techniques. Students can take advantage of Flatiron’s employer network for active career opportunities as soon as they graduate.

How to apply:

Interested? Prospective students can chat with admissions virtually to see if Flatiron might be a good fit, then complete an online application followed by an admissions interview + assessment. Pro tip: Enrollment is open year-round, so you can apply anytime.

See you in the (virtual) classroom, Seattle.*

Open

  • Get ready players. Seattle’s GameWorks is open again under new management after the downtown entertainment destination closed late last year. Many of the video games remain the same, but the new owners added new furniture, created a “retro” lounge + overhauled the esports space. 🕹️ (GeekWire)

  • Could this officially break Zillow? The estate of Paul Allen sold a whole bunch of Mercer Island properties this week to the tune of $67.1 million. Among the properties in the sale are two waterfront mansions built in the 1990s. (Seattle Times)

Biz

  • Yesterday, Mayor Bruce Harrell announced plans to expand the Seattle Restored downtown pop-up program, which debuted in April. Ranked

  • We’re not like a regular city — we’re a cool city. A new study from Harvard + the US Census Bureau found that Seattle was the fifth most popular metro area for millennials in the 2010s. Among the factors that made it so attractive were its natural beauty + booming tech biz. (Seattle Times)

Community

  • Looking for ways to give back? Peruse this new guide to South Seattle’s most prominent mutual aid groups that provide direct assistance to the community. Among the orgs listed are A Will & A Way, For the People + Long Haul Kitchen. ❤️ (South Seattle Emerald)

Film

  • Roll out that red carpet. Vashon Island is hosting its inaugural film festival from Fri., Aug 12-Sun., Aug 14. Narrative features include the horror flick “Crabs!” (about crab monsters, of course) + “1-800-Hot-Nite,” produced by two Vashion locals. 🎥

Tech

  • No sweat, right? Thanks to newer satellite technology, meteorologists were able to predict Seattle’s heat wave early. There are thousands of mathematical variables to take into account, but the latest weather tech sorts through the humidity, temperature + wind data with greater precision. (Seattle Times)

Drink

  • Setting down its tent stakes, Madison Valley’s new bar Kamp recently held its grand opening. There’s a robust selection of half-proof + zero-proof cocktails for those cutting down on booze, and the kitchen serves comfort foods like cast iron cornbread, confit jerk spice duck leg + soft serve.

Sports

  • Never too early to pitch in. The Mariners’ major new trade acquisition Luis Castillo will make his debut for the team on Wed., Aug. 3 against the New York Yankees. Castillo was an All-Star and has a 2.84 ERA and 90 strikeouts. ⚾ (KOMO)

DISH OF THE DAY

Celebrating Choco Tuesday

Yes, there’s always still room for dessert. 🍦

Many may still be mourning the loss of the Choco Taco after company Klondike announced it would be discontinuing the brand. But weep not, Seattleites — a couple of local versions can easily fill the void, including one at Ballard restaurant Sawyer.

Sawyer’s version of a Choco Taco has a graham waffle shell. | Photo by Sawyer

Chef Mitch Mayers has been serving this playful, S’mores-like twist on the classic for years now, served in a graham waffle cone with peanut butter ice cream + toasted meringue.

It takes its place alongside a Choco Taco take at cocktail bar Canon and a soon-to-be released version from Salt & Straw as Seattle’s enduring homages to the dearly departed treat.

But if you wanna get even more nostalgic for after-school summer snacks, be sure to try:

  • Sawyer’s Dilly Bar: made with cookie dough semifreddo in a Theo chocolate shell
  • Nue’s Otter Pops: boozy — so a little more adult than you remember
  • Hello Robin’s Ice Cream Sandwiches: stuffed to the gills

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: If you’re looking for more activities with A/C this summer, be sure to put Roxbury Lanes on the list. It’s a bowling alley, tiny casino + bar all wrapped in one — and a total time capsule with some retro decor.

Look, sometimes all you need is some crunchy mozzarella sticks, pitchers of cheap beer, and a way to hit a tricky spare that would make “The Big Lebowski” jealous. That’s how we roll, dude. 🎳
