Buy us some peanuts and Cracker Jack, we don’t care if we ever get back — MLB All-Star Week is almost here.

The annual festivities are in Seattle for the first time in 22 years — let’s all cheer. A lot of focus is on two marquee events: the Home Run Derby on Monday, July 10 (Julio Rodríguez is in this one), and the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 11 (showcasing the best players in the league).

Both events are close to sold out, but there are other fun activities going on in and around T-Mobile Park.

Event lineup

HBCU Swingman Classic | Friday, July 7 | 7 p.m. | T-Mobile Park | $10 | This game highlights 50 student athletes from Division I programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Play Ball Park | Saturday, July 8-Tuesday, July 11 | Times vary | Lumen Field + Lumen Field Event Center | $35+ | It’s essentially a family-friendly baseball carnival with virtual reality experiences, auctions, batting cages, artwork, and coaching from special guests.

2023 MLB Futures / Celebrity Softball Game | Saturday, July 8 | 4 p.m. | T-Mobile Park | $30-$80 | Watch celebrities like Joel McHale and JoJo Siwa duke it out on the field after a game featuring top baseball prospects.

Traffic... (*sigh*)

This is really the big question on everyone’s mind.

If you’re heading out to the festivities, here are some options to avoid a parking spot fight.
  • The Mariners have opened a RideShare lot for people taking Ubers or Lyfts.
  • The Light Rail’s Stadium Station is only a short walk away.
  • Sound Transit will also be running special Sounder train service to both the Home Run Derby on Monday, July 10 and the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 11.
If you’re staying home, just expect Downtown, Pioneer Square, SoDo, and Belltown to be a bit of a general mess. Watch road closures on WSDOT’s website.

Last week we asked what you thought about Seattle’s new Downtown Activation Plan. Here’s what you said:

The announcement comes as the number of workers commuting to downtown rises closer to pre-pandemic levels.

Lots of you seemed to be in support of the mayor’s new Downtown Activation Plan. Out of those of you who responded, 50% said they loved the plan and another 25% were at least enthusiastic about some of the ideas included. Safety was the big ticket item with 70% of you all saying that was your biggest priority.

I don’t know if you’ve looked at the full lineup for the All-Star Week Celebrity Game, but it’s bound to be very silly. I’m a personal fan of “Community”, so it’ll be fun to see Joel McHale (a UW alum) run around for a bit. I am just disappointed we didn’t get a Snoop Dog appearance like in 2015. I would have paid exorbitant amounts of money to watch him play softball.
