Members of the King County Council have proposed raising the minimum wage to $18.99 per hour for unincorporated areas. Currently, workers in neighborhoods like White Center, Skyway, and Vashon Island are subject to the state’s $15.74 minimum wage, rather than Seattle’s $18.69 rate. (Seattle Times)

Imagine all the tapas-bilities. Spanish restaurant Pinxto by Valdemar plans to open on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 17409 133rd Ave. NE in Woodinville. The restaurant boasts wines from Valdemar’s Walla Walla estate alongside dishes like charred octopus and patatas bravas with smoked yogurt.

The Seattle Slam Showdown free basketball tournament takes place tomorrow and Sunday for kids ages 8-13. Registration for the event at 551 Denny Way is still open, but walk-up players can join the fun, too.
Traffic
Plan those detours, weekend warriors. All lanes of I-405 will be closed in both directions between Bellevue and Renton for the next two days as workers widen the interstate and add express toll lanes. The closure goes from 11:30 p.m. tonight until 4 a.m. Monday. (KING 5)

Cool things are happening at West Seattle Elementary. The school debuted a bunch of upgrades this week that include a larger library, new playgrounds, and a basketball court. A 20,000-sqft second story was also added to the building to accommodate 100+ more students than its previous capacity. (Seattle Times)

Rainier Valley’s Detective Cookie Chess Park is hosting a peace pole dedication tomorrow from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The tradition originated in Japan and centers around setting up poles that read, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages. There will be free food + chess at the ceremony.
Festival
Citywide live music festival Cloudbreak is getting ready to rock out for its second annual run. The event series, which runs November 1-22, will feature 185 artists — including local grunge legends Mudhoney. Folks staying at participating hotels will also get free access to select concerts. Time for a staycation.

Mt. Joy to the world — the sustainably-minded fried chicken food truck co-founded by restaurateur Ethan Stowell made its debut in Capitol Hill yesterday. You can find the Mt. Joy mobile operation serving sandwiches, fries, and milkshakes at 1600 E. Olive Way. More locations are on the way.

Seattle may get new institute dedicated to Mars missions

Get in the capsule, Earthlings — we’re going to Mars. Well, at least we’re thinking about the trip even more now that the Mars Society is eyeing Seattle for a new facility.
In a recent podcast, the founder of the spacey nonprofit mentioned that our city is at the top of the list for its planned Mars Technology Institute, a research hub that would explore the feasibility of not just landing on the Red Planet but also setting up colonies. Real futuristic stuff.
Seattle’s abundance of biotech and AI ventures came up in the podcast discussion. But here are other great reasons why we’d make fantastic hosts:
