Meet Seattle’s Arts and Cultural Districts

Uptown became the city’s third official Arts and Culture District in 2017. But its reputation as a hub for cool stuff started back with the 1962 World’s Fair — ever heard of it?
The district stretches all the way from the Seattle Center into Lower Queen Anne and is supported by 45+ local arts and cultural organizations. It’s also connected by the Uptown Arts & Culture Coalition — a member-led nonprofit that sseeking to help each org. thrive.
In addition to housing arts groups, this area is also home to Bumbershoot, Day In Day Out Fest, Northwest Folklife, and the Seattle Center’s Festál cultural festival series.
🎨 Notable orgs
ArtsFund | This nonprofit founded in 1969 distributes grants to various arts organizations. Since its founding, the fund has distributed more than $100 million to 650+ grantees.
Queen Anne Historical Society | Dedicated to preserving and documenting the neighborhood’s history, the group is also a great resource for finding information on the area’s 50+ landmarks and historic homes.
ArtsED Washington | This nonprofit works to make sure every student has access to arts as part of their K-12 education.
Local radio station KEXP hosts its Concerts at the Mural series right down the block from its studio in the Seattle Center.
McCaw Hall | Both the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Seattle Opera stage their performances here.
SIFF Cinema | What began as solely a film festival is now a multi-theater organization aimed at educating others through the power of storytelling.

Sound Transit will soon launch new app and website RideGuide to help riders plan trips. The agency is still testing out the technology, but hopes to roll out the first phase in late November. Coming later will be a chatbot, digital fare payment, and an interactive kiosk. (The Urbanist)

Despite recent rainy days, there’s still a water shortage in the city. Seattle Public Utilities said its not sure when the shortage will end, but the department has seen a reduction in water usage from Seattleites — so keep up the good work. (Seattle Times)
Traffic
The West Seattle swing bridge reopened yesterday, four days earlier than expected — nice. The bridge had closed Saturday, Oct. 4 so crews could complete a maintenance task on its hydraulic system. (Seattle Times)
Coming Soon
Here’s a big scoop for ya — Salt & Straw has announced plans to open a new location in Bellevue next year. The ice cream shop is slated to move downtown at 10300 NE Eighth St. with a projected opening date in late February 2024.
Sports
Local soccer club Ballard FC will move all of its home games in the 2024 season from Interbay Stadium to Memorial Stadium while Interbay gets ADA upgrades. The team will return once construction is complete. (My Ballard)

Feeling a little extra thirsty during your ferry ride? A few Washington State vessels are sporting new Coca-Cola advertisements on their sterns and bows as the agency looks to boost revenue. They’ll be in place until Nov. 19. (KING 5)

Seattle entrepreneurs are trending younger, according to LendingTree’s analysis of startup funding requests between July 2022 and June 2023. The average age of business founders was 40.14 in 2020, but has now lowered to 36.96. (Puget Sound Business Journal)

Downtown outdoor retailer Arc’teryx will be leaving its 400 Pine St. location for a bigger storefront across the street. The new space at 401 Pike St. is set to open in early 2024 with double its current square footage. (Puget Sound Business Journal)
