🏗️ Seeing all the angles

SLU’s wavy new apartment high-rise ready to open soon

There’s a new tower making waves in South Lake Union. The Skyglass Apartments high-rise brings a striking addition to the Seattle skyline with an undulating exterior that looks like you can rappel down it on a boogie board.

Construction at the 31-story development at 757 Thomas St. off Dexter Avenue is currently wrapping up, with plans to open the building to residents on Feb. 15.

We strapped on a hardhat to get an early look — here’s what to expect.

Why the funky design?

Architecture firm Hewitt was inspired to create a design that would mesh well with nearby Elliott Bay and the surrounding environment. The idea was for the building to look as if it were in motion when the sun and clouds pass across the reflective glass.

The angular, zig-zaggy exterior also creates a variety of apartment layouts, so no more than three units are the same. Residents will get much different views depending on what floor they live on.

Luxe perks

Thanks to Skyglass’s location just outside the downtown Seattle core, the vistas that look north offer unobstructed sight lines. Several apartments directly face the Space Needle, which kinda makes it feel like it’s right in your living room. On another side, you get sweeping city views.

Among the towering amenities are an outdoor pool on the roof, a garden terrace with fire pits + barbecue stations, a yoga studio, fitness center, and small dog park (yeah, even the pups get to live it up here).

There’s also a co-working space on the ground floor with a colorful mural salvaged from the old Eberharter Commercial building that stood in the location.

Apartment prices at Skyglass range from ~$2,000 for studios up to ~$6,000 for three-bedroom apartments. They’re still being leased and you can book a tour to get a gander.

🏕️ Stay at Aliya Preserve for an Olympic Coast wonderland vacay

a gif showing the Aliya pods and the surrounding campgrounds
AliyaPods, cabins, and campsites provide the perfect mix of adventure and comfort — plus they’re just so cute. | GIF by SEAtoday; photos provided by Aliya Preserve
This land was once slated to become a high-volume resort, if you can believe it. Located adjacent to Olympic National Park and along the same iconic beach and bluff as Kalaloch, LaPush, Ruby Beach, and other coastal WA icons, it became Aliya Preserve instead.

Owners Adam and Sari Simon set out to preserve the land, creating ways for visitors to enjoy it while protecting what makes it so beautiful.

At Aliya, guests can rent campsites, cabins, or “AliyaPod” mini cabins via Hipcamp and Airbnb. Whether camping or glamping, guests at Aliya Preserve are immersed in the mythical Pacific Northwest ecology — wind-sculpted Sitka-spruce forests and mossy cliffside knolls along the wild Pacific Coast. Catch a panoramic sunset over the water from a super-secluded campsite or cabin on the cliffs.

Adam and Sari invite all Seattleites to this secluded and pristine wonderland to share and build memories + connections to this land for years to come.

A show of ‘mythical’ proportions

New Seattle Asian Art Museum exhibit has ‘mythic’ proportions

Attention, curious art lovers — an exhibit that uses live performances and textiles to discuss social displacement makes its debut at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) on Thursday, Jan. 18.

“Hybrid Skin, Mythical Presence” comes from Tacoma-based artist Anida Yoeu Ali, who created two performance pieces from visually eye-catching garments. Elements of each performance reflect her identity as a Cham-Muslim woman born in Cambodia and raised in the US.

In “The Buddhist Bug,” Ali dons a bright orange, worm-like costume as she silently interacts with onlookers. For “The Red Chador,” she covers herself in a red cloak traditionally worn by Muslim women. Ali has performed both works all over the world — including in Bellevue — throughout the past decade.

At SAAM, you can see clothes, videos, and photos from Ali’s performances on display through July 7. She’ll also be here to perform each work in person on March 23 and June 1.

From the editor
It’s amazing to live in a nerdy city where orchestras play video game music — there was a “Sonic” show earlier this month and “Final Fantasy” is on the way. Personally, I’d love to hear the dulcet sounds of Seattle’s own “Mario” next. How about you? Send in suggestions.
