Where to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Seattle

Though its official dates vary across different Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year is a celebration of the start of spring and a new year on the lunisolar calendar.

2025 is the Year of the Snake, an animal representing sensitivity, adaptability, and calm + collective nature.

Expect plenty of lion dances, firecrackers, gifts of money in red envelopes, and other festivities around the Seattle area in the coming weeks. Here are just a few Lunar New Year events to check out .
  • Wing Luke Museum’s Lunar New Year Fair | Saturday, Feb. 3 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. | Wing Luke Museum | $10-$17 | Enjoy lion dances, ceramics classes, crafts, snacks, raffles, and calligraphy courses.
  • Bellevue Lunar New Year Celebration | Saturday, Jan. 25 | 11 a.m.-6 p.m. | Bellevue Collection | Free | Festivities include live performances, martial arts, craft making, and photo pop-ups.
  • Tet in Seattle | Saturday, Jan. 25-Sunday, Jan. 26 | Various times | Seattle Center | Free | As a part of the Seattle Center’s Festal series, this big event celebrates Vietnamese culture with opera performances, live dancers, fashion shows, music, and eating competitions.
  • Lunar New Year Night Market | Saturday, Feb. 8 | 3-10 p.m. | Magnuson Park Hangar 30 | $15-$25 | This 21+ market will showcase 40+ local AAPI-owned businesses, lion dance performances, and a dance party.
  • Chinatown-International District’s Lunar New Year Celebration | Saturday, Feb. 22 | 11-4 p.m. | Chinatown-International District | Free | One of Seattle’s biggest events will include a food walk featuring local businesses, lots of vendors, and performances.

Announced
  • He’s bringing sexy back to Seattle. Popstar Justin Timberlake recently announced that he’ll be taking The Forget Tomorrow Tour to Climate Pledge Arena on May 2. Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m.
Transit
  • The Federal Transit Administration has awarded the City of Seattle $64.2 million for the construction of the RapidRide J Line as part of the Small Starts grant program. The project’s budget is set at $128.5 million — additional funds will come from a variety of city departments.
Legacy
  • Seattle restaurateur Sarah Penn died at the age of 57 from ovarian cancer. Penn owned Frank’s Oyster House + Champagne Parlor and Pair in Ravenna. Pair closed during the pandemic in 2020 but now houses the James Beard Award-nominated Pancita. (Seattle Times)
Traffic
  • Taking transit in Redmond will be a little easier now that the Overlake Village Station Bridge is open. The pedestrian/biking passage crosses Highway 520, connecting the forthcoming Eastside Redmond Technology Light Rail station to Microsoft offices. (Seattle Times)
Community
  • Seattle Parks and Rec is looking for community input as it unveils designs for the Garfield Super Block project. Attendees will be able to learn more about the project plans and ask the managing team questions. The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 1, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Garfield Community Center Multi-Purpose Room.
Closing
  • Bellevue restaurant the Lunchbox Labratory is now closed after 12 years in business. The burger joint faced financial challenges in 2018 from a flooding issue that it hasn’t recovered from. The space at 989 112th Ave. NE is now for sale. (Bellevue Downtown Network)
