Night owls 🤝 coffee shops

Seattle may be an “early to bed, early to rise” kind of city, but that doesn’t mean we’re without a healthy population of night owls.

Whether you’re finishing up some work, cramming for an exam, or taking advantage of a late night creative spurt, sometimes you need a quiet place to work away from home.

Hunker down at one of these late-night studying spots around town, open even after the sun’s long gone:

Hellbent Brewing Company | Beer’s a brain food, right? It’s hard not to get creative after a beer or two. But jokes aside, breweries can offer calm atmospheres + pretty solid bites later into the evening. This one’s open until 12 a.m. Friday + Saturday and until 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Armistice Coffee Roosevelt | While most of Armistice’s locations close early in the day, its Roosevelt coffee shop stays open until 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Cafe on the Ave | For the serious late-night workers, this U District diner has hours on Friday + Saturday that run until 2 a.m. But weeknights can still be a refuge with a closing time of 11 p.m.

Tea Republik | Camp out here until 10 p.m. Sunday-Friday or 11 p.m. on Saturday — plus, there’s nothing a warm mug of loose leaf tea can’t fix.

A few more pro tips

  • While the Seattle Public Library’s branches don’t stay open super late, a good portion of them have hours that extend until 8 p.m. during the week.
  • Bars can get pretty rowdy on the weekends, but visiting on a weeknight can help you avoid the regular crowds + get you out of the house for the evening. Also, some have rad late night happy hours.
  • If you don’t mind spilling some extra cash, coworking spaces like The Cloud Room offer membership packages that come with 24/7 access to their office.

    Get gone, gooey gourds

A pumpkin with a creepy smiling face sits on a rock outside.
Sure, your pumpkin may still look okay now, but wait a week or two. | Photo by Scott McLeod
Falling colorful leaves and creatively designed pumpkins are autumnal trademarks... that is until the gourds get gross and the leaves start clogging up pipes.

Here are some greener ways to get rid of nature’s decomposing decorations.

    Getting rid of the gourds

If you’re looking to support the community, farms will often take whole, un-carved pumpkins as donations to feed animals like goats and pigs. Pumpkins for Pigs is a nationwide service that connects people with farms looking for such donations. But you can also drop off your ghoulish gourds with the Sammamish Animal Sanctuary to give their animals an extra treat.

    Rake it away

Throughout November, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) offers extra free yard pickup services to encourage residents to keep gutters + drains clear.

If you don’t want to wait for SPU pick-up, King County also has a list of yard waste drop-off spots in the area.

    The Wrap

    Today’s edition by: Alina

While I was out and dressed up as a vampire for Halloween this past weekend, I had a stranger ask me if I was a magician despite the blood, fangs, and severely paled skin.

But that’s okay, Madeline (who was dressed as Beetlejuice) also got asked if they were an Oompa Loompa on a number of occasions.

    So, we did great.
