Whoa, it’s f-f-f-freezing out there. It’s quite a good thing we’ve invented what can only be described as a hug you can eat — soup.

From tender meats mixed with noodles to broths simmered to perfection over hours, here’s where to ladle in the best broths around town.

Party hearty

El Mezcalito
The pozole at this family-run Mexican restaurant is simply stewrific, served with tortillas to sop up all that pork and hominy.

Send in noodz

Lucky’s Pho
There are several local icons around town known for this delectable dish — but don’t sleep on this under-the-radar spot with broths as smooth as silk.

For veggie lovers

Secret Congee
The mushroom and fried taro version of the Southeast Asian rice porridge makes us feel like curling up by the fire and hibernating all winter.

    News Notes

    Legacy

Seattle Kraken co-founder and co-owner David Bonderman, 82, has died. Bonderman was known as a strong advocate of Seattle and particularly fond of his time working as a Space Needle security guard. To honor his legacy, Kraken players have added a new “Bondo” sticker to their helmets. (KING 5)

    Travel

Got a wanderlust itch? Alaska Airlines recently announced two new direct international flights that will begin with its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines. Direct service to Tokyo will start in May 2025 and service to Seoul will start in October. Some tickets are already on sale. (KING 5)

    Transit

A final design has been created for a transit project meant to improve eventual Light Rail station access along NE 130th + 125th streets. To support the station — slated to open in 2026 — the design includes protected bike lanes, a new roundabout on Roosevelt Way NE, and new bus only lanes. Construction should begin in 2025.

    Biz

It looks like Fred Meyer and Safeway will remain separate for now. Albertsons has reportedly “given up” on its merger deal with Kroger after two judges halted the move. Albertsons has indicated that it now plans to sue Kroger over the failed deal. More than 15 Seattle grocery stores were set to close because of the merger. (KING 5)

    Civic

The City of Bellevue has begun a year-long process to revise its Affordable Housing Strategy to include a new goal of adding or preserving 5,700 units in the next 10 years. The revision will include a series of action items to help the city reach its new goal. Keep an eye out for public engagement opportunities. (Downtown Bellevue Network)

    Open

Mercer Island fave Hap’s Burgers & Taps is open once again under new ownership after closing in September. The restaurant — known for its repurposed retro gas station exterior — originally debuted in 2019, and now operates under the Mercer Island native-owned company Seattle Conscious Hospitality Group. (Puget Sound Business Journal)

    Drink

Seattle’s responsible for some serious liquid gold. SODO’s Westland Distillery’s Wine Cask Finish was recently named one of the “20 Most Exciting Whiskies of 2024” by Whiskey Advocate, brushing elbows with famous brands like Angel’s Envy and Heaven Hill. This is the second time the distillery has made it onto this reputable list. (Whisky Advocate)

    Community

Bust out the green birthday cake. Community-loved garden shop Swanson’s Nursery is now 100 years old. The shop was founded in 1924 by Swedish immigrant August Swanson and his wife Selma who were only growing begonias, lilies, irises, and dahlias at the time. (KING 5)

    ✈️ Plane and simple

    SeaTacAirportView_SEA
Sea-Tac Airport continues to roll out new upgrades to its space. | Photo via the Port of Seattle
The busy holiday travel season is upon us, and we’ve got a little gift for you. If you’re flying via Sea-Tac International Airport, we’ve created a guide that covers everything from parking + terminal upgrades, to nonstop flights. Smooth travels, friends.

    What to know

Security line wait times can vary each day, but Sea-Tac recommends getting to the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. SEA Spot Saver app can help reserve your place in the security line. Pro tip: Since 80% of Seattle departures are scheduled in the morning, lines tend to lighten up after 11 a.m. — so book a midday flight, if you can.

      Current airport updates

Sea-Tac is currently undergoing a multi-year renovation project spread across 1 million sqft, and we’re already seeing progress.

The construction walls near Alaska Airlines’ ticketing center have come down revealing extra lobby space, new LED screens, and terrazzo flooring. But a lot more will be changing in the coming years. Construction should be done by 2026.

Westland Distillery was kind enough to invite me out for the launch party of the Wine Cask Finish bottle that just got that Whisky Advocate mention when they released it over the summer. My notes: very yummy. Although, I actually liked the Beer Cask Finish a little better. Both are going to make excellent gifts if you’re still looking around.
