Each year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January — Jan. 16 this year. The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems,” according to The King Center — a nonprofit founded by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, to continue Dr. King’s legacy.
If you have time to dedicate to our community, here are three local volunteer opportunities:
- Ballard Food Bank | After relocating to a new facility in 2021, the food bank has increased its capacity, and hopes to find food baggers, packagers, van drivers, and mail desk support.
- Black Farmers Collective | With a mission to develop a Black farmer-led food system through a cooperative network and land stewardship, the group offers a chance to get your hands dirty Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Yes Farm (715 Yesler Way).
- United Way of King County | In its ongoing effort to help those in low-income households access essential services, the local chapter of this national organization offers free tax prep each year. Anyone qualified to crunch some numbers can pitch in.
