We can’t think of a better way to soak in Seattle’s greenspace than spending some time on the links.

Whether you’re looking to connect with friends or you’re honing in on the perfect swing, here are golf courses to make a tee time around the Emerald City region (including indoor options).

Public courses

Bellevue Golf Course, 5500, 140th Ave. NE, Bellevue | The year-round facility offers a challenge for all levels and terrific landscaping for just a leisurely weekend stroll. PGA-certified pros are also on-hand for lessons.

West Seattle Golf Course, 4470 35th Ave. SW, Seattle | Spy downtown Seattle and Elliott Bay from certain holes. If you’re in a hurry, try the “fast lane” program Monday-Friday, which guarantees a full round in under four hours.

Take it indoors

Topgolf, various locations | The brand with outposts in Kirkland, downtown Seattle, and Renton is billed as an entertainment complex with golf as a focus. You can chill at the bar + grill, hang on the rooftop terrace, or practice your swing in a virtual golfing suite.

Five Iron Golf, 1525 11th Ave., Seattle | Leaning into the franchise’s clubby vibes, this Capitol Hill lounge lets you book simulators and lessons in advance — or throw a swingin’ party for dozens of guests.

Driving ranges

Interbay Golf Center, 2501 15th Ave. W., Seattle| Even when the weather is chilly, you can stay cozy here with heated + covered stalls. Look for virtual gaming options and mini golf, too.

University of Washington Golf Range, 2800 NE Clark Rd., Seattle| There’s plenty of room to spread out at the low-key spot that’s lighted for night driving. You don’t need to attend the school to use the range (though students get a discount), and clubs are complimentary with bucket rental.

News Notes
Development
  • A new affordable housing complex is now open in Rainier Beach. The six-story Elizabeth Thomas Homes building has 119 units priced for households making ~50-60% of the area’s median income. It also boasts a courtyard with a playground and an exterior design by local artist Mujale Chisebuka. (Seattle Times)
Legacy
  • Seattle bartending legend Murray Stenson died at the age of 74 on Friday. Stenson built a strong reputation for reviving old school cocktails, particularly the Last Word, at Zig Zag Cafe and other local spots. He also mentored many other bartenders and was a beloved fixture in the community. (Seattle Times + Seattle Met)
Biz

Tech
  • Bellevue recently boosted its “smart city” rep by installing new Small Wireless Facilities (SWF). The SWFs are similar to cell towers functionally, but not as cumbersome since they can be installed on light poles and blend in. The city has four of them right now, with 15 more in the midst of the permit process. (Downtown Bellevue Network)
Feel Good
  • When Beyoncé devotee Joe Hetherington — who was born with cerebral palsy — missed the pop star’s show in Seattle due to travel complications with his wheelchair, the Bey-Hive helped out. Fans tagged the singer and her management on social media, and Hetherington got tickets to a Texas show. (Seattle Times)
Sports
  • The puck drops here, hockey fans. In case you missed it, the Seattle Kraken began training camp last week and will have preseason games against other NHL squads starting today. You can watch their practices for free later this week at the Kraken Community Iceplex.
Trending
  • The Roman Empire is trending on social media. For those who don’t think about the ancient civilization as often as the subjects in the viral videos, check out these audio books from the Seattle Public Library for a quick history lesson.
Drink
  • This brand believed there was a way to take water and make it a little more perfect by infusing it with fruit essences (but none of the gross diet sweeteners, calories, or sugar). And the fruit flavors really taste like fruit. Groundbreaking. Plus, new customers get 36 bottles for $36 + free shipping.*

Not all heroes wear capes — sometimes they wear garden gloves.

Seattle Parks and Recreation is currently seeking nominations for its Denny Awards, which gives much-deserved accolades to all the wonderful volunteers who get their hands dirty for our parks system.

Anybody can nominate a volunteer (or themselves). The main criteria:
  • The nominee should “demonstrate exceptional stewardship” of parks and/or recreation
  • They should have devoted a significant time commitment to volunteer work
  • They must show support of the department’s goals of social justice and its Thriving Environment Initiative
Got someone in mind who checks the boxes? Go ahead and get their name in by Friday, Oct. 20.

And if all this community kudos talk has you inspired, be sure to peruse our list of volunteer opportunities in Seattle. Giving is its own reward, too.

I just had to laugh at this on-point TikTok video showing a Seattleite’s rapid fall prep as soon as the forecast shows the slightest temperature dip.

Don’t know about you, but I’ve got the candles lit, windbreakers out, and Kirkland-brand wine stocked, too.
