Got those bubble-filling pens ready to go? King County’s Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, so you’ve got just under a week to return those ballots.

There are several propositions and 170+ positions on the ballot this go around. But don’t worry, you don’t have to make decisions on all of those — just the ones in your jurisdiction.

🗳 Ballot measures

Up for renewal is Seattle’s Affordable Housing Levy, which helps fund housing services for low income residents. If approved, the levy would be in place for seven years where it’s expected to raise ~$970 million over that timeframe.

This money would be used for:
  • The construction of 2,900 rental homes and renovations to 600 existing homes
  • Construction of 300 new affordable homes
  • Funds to help residents avoid evictions

🗳 Candidates

Whew — there are a lot of choices to be made in this section. Some of the notable races include:
  • King County’s Director of Elections
  • Councilmember positions for the City of Seattle, King County, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and several smaller towns within the county
  • Mayoral races in Redmond, Algona, Clyde Hill, Lake Forest Park, North Bend, Pacific, Renton, and Tukwila
  • Several School District Director positions across King County
  • Fire Department Commissioners
Made your choices? Make sure to mail back your ballot before or on Tuesday, Nov. 7, drop it off at one of several boxes around town, or visit a voting center if you need some help.

News Notes
Concert
  • Wait, is that the sun shining just a little bit? Cloudbreak, Seattle’s citywide music festival that lets hotel visitors see shows for free, has kicked off and will run until Wednesday, Nov. 22. The festival features more than 100 artists like Shaina Shepherd and the Smokey Brights, across 30+ venues.
Closing
  • PCC Community Market will be closing its downtown location on January 31, 2024 due to the store’s financial struggles. This move comes after the business announced a loss in profits for the first time since the ‘90s. The downtown location has been open for less than two years.
Transit
  • Don’t forget to tap those ORCA cards. Starting Wednesday, Nov. 15, Sound Transit will resume passing out citations to Link Light Rail passengers who fail to pay before boarding. Previously, Sound Transit only issued warnings to offenders. (Seattle Times)
Environment
  • Bellevue’s looking a little bit leafier these days. The city recently gave away 800 free trees to its residents and planted several more at Bannerwood Park as part of its local Arbor Day celebration. Bellevue hopes to reach a 40% tree canopy in the city by 2050.
Transit
  • Ferry lines may be a bit more backed up. Another Washington State Ferry is expected to be out of service for awhile after experiencing engine failure. The Chimacum ferry had been serving on the Seattle/Bremerton route; a ferry from the Edmonds/Kingston route was moved over to compensate. (KING 5)
Development
  • A new study by RentCafe shows that Redmond’s zip code area has the highest number of new apartments in the region with 5,121 units built in five years. The second-most active zip code was the area of Queen Anne + South Lake Union with 4,780 new rentals.
Open
  • We’re going coco-nuts. New sweet shop Yezi Coconut Dessert is now open in Bellevue’s Pacific Center building at 10617 NE Second St. The menu consists a variety of natural coconut jellies with flavors like rose peach gum coconut and caramelized durian coconut. (Downtown Bellevue Network)

Wow, I think I made the best chicken noodle soup that I’ve ever made the other night. Want a tip? Soy sauce will give your broth and chicken a rich, meatier flavor than just salt. Just be careful not to add so much that you can’t taste all of the other yummy flavors you’ve added in. I started using a some of Trader Joe’s Umami Seasoning Blend to add some extra oomph.
