🎶 Baby, come back

Answered: Which closed Seattle businesses do you miss the most?

Valentine’s Day may be over — but we can’t forget about Seattle’s beloved mainstays that have come + gone. Like any lost love, there are days where we find ourselves pining for their return.

This month, two Capitol Hill restaurants that have been around for more than 30 years are saying farewell: Coastal Kitchen and Ristorante Machiavelli.

On the brighter side, we’ll soon see a couple of triumphant comebacks as legendary karaoke venue Bush Garden plans to open in a new location this spring and downtown’s Lusty Lady building continues development as a new arts venue.

During a wave of nostalgia for iconic local venues, we got to thinking: What shuttered businesses would we like to see return to glory?

To get the conversation started, here are a few personal picks:
  • Dahlia Lounge | Many longtime residents likely remember Tom Douglas’s award-winning Belltown restaurant as one of the first places you went for a fancy night out. Dahlia Bakery is thankfully still around, though.
  • Mutual Fish Co. | The fishmonger on Rainier Avenue closed last fall after 76 years of supplying home cooks and restaurateurs alike with some of the best seafood you could buy in town.
  • Guild 45th Theater | Sure, it might have been a bit musty in the later years, but any time an indie movie house closes, it feels like a blow to the city as a whole.
For a more in-depth trip down memory lane, check out Vanishing Seattle, which regularly tracks significant closings around town.

Now we’d like to hear from you.

🏕️ Weekend plans: Rent a secluded cabin close to Olympic National Park

a gif showing the Aliya pods and the surrounding campgrounds
AliyaPods, cabins, and campsites provide the perfect mix of adventure and comfort — plus they’re just so cute. | GIF by SEAtoday; photos provided by Aliya Preserve
This land was once slated to become a high-volume resort, if you can believe it. Located adjacent to Olympic National Park and along the same iconic beach and bluff as Kalaloch, LaPush, Ruby Beach, and other coastal WA icons, it became Aliya Preserve instead.

Owners Adam and Sari Simon set out to preserve the land, creating ways for visitors to enjoy it while protecting what makes it so beautiful.

At Aliya, guests can rent campsites, cabins, or “AliyaPod” mini cabins via Hipcamp and Airbnb. Whether camping or glamping, guests at Aliya Preserve are immersed in the mythical Pacific Northwest ecology — wind-sculpted Sitka-spruce forests and mossy cliffside knolls along the wild Pacific Coast. Catch a panoramic sunset over the water from a super-secluded campsite or cabin on the cliffs.

Adam and Sari invite all Seattleites to this secluded and pristine wonderland to share and build memories + connections to this land for years to come.

  • 6% — that’s how much the supply of Seattle area homebuilder lots increased year-over-year, according to recent data from housing research firm Zonda. The modest growth was not enough to change the city’s lot status as “significantly undersupplied,” as local house hunters can attest. (Fast Company)

⚽ Rave-ing about the Sounders’ new HQ

Sounders reveal fancy new training digs in Renton

Ain’t this a kick? The Sounders just unveiled their shiny new training facility and headquarters in Renton — and it still has that new turf smell.

Known as the Sounders FC Center at Longacres, the sprawling, 150-acre campus will be home to pretty much everything the club does outside of games at Lumen Field. It includes:
  • Four full-size training pitches (two grass + two turf ones)
  • 50,000 sqft of office space
  • Locker rooms for the first team, Tacoma Defiance, and the Sounders Academy
  • A world-class gym (of course)
  • Treatment and recovery rooms with a sauna, hot + cold tubs, and a cryotherapy chamber
Longacres marks the first time that both the Sounders’ soccer and business operations will be under one roof. And it’s good timing. With the World Cup on the way to Seattle in 2026, it helps to have a state-of-the-art pro soccer facility as a welcome mat.

Where would you like to see a Super Block?

Recently, we talked about the Garfield Super Block project in the works and asked where you’d prefer a Super Block elsewhere. The leading vote-getter was West Seattle, followed closely by Capitol Hill. But there were also write-in requests for Northgate, Roosevelt, and downtown Renton.

Just want to shout my trivia team (Jayson, Patrick, and Melanie) for coming in first this week at Sam’s Tavern. My main contribution was remembering that Berlin sang the 80s power ballad “Take My Breath Away.” Ah, the useless knowledge I have.
