⚓️ Have a mari-time

Have a mari-time with these rentable boats in Seattle

A very large yacht sits on what appears to be Lake Washington while a shirtless man pokes up from the upper balcony. An American flag is waving in the background.

It’s the age-old question for many Seattleites while basking in the summer sun, cold drink in hand: “do I know anyone with a boat?”

It’s not that we’re ever ungrateful for the beauty of our famously short summers, but it’s just that we could be having so much more fun cruising through the waves of Lake Union or Lake Washington.

Meet Getmyboat, an Airbnb-like service that allows Seattleites to rent out other people’s boats.

🚤 How it works

The interface is fairly simple — all you have to do is create an account and start searching for the watercraft that best suits your needs for the day (think: catamarans, pontoons, yachts, jet skis, and more). Prices range from as low as $75 per hour to $1,375 an hour — so get as fancy as you want.

Some rental options include a captain for those without a boating license. Reservations can also be made as quickly as next-day (for all you last-minute adventurers).

A trawler boat is decked out with pink and blue lights — indicating a strong party vibe.

Imagine the silly shenanigans you and your friends would get up to on this party boat.

🚤 What we’re eyeing

With ~160 active listings in Seattle, there’s a lot to sort through. Here are some of our faves (because we also couldn’t resist window-shopping):

Sunseeker 65’ Voted Best Charter 2023 | This listing has some royal energy — get a whole crew to tow you around on the lake whilst you enjoy the wet bar, sound system, and cash in on the opportunity to use the boat for an overnight trip to the San Juan Islands.

Classic Trawler for Lake Union | Are you going to tell us that you don’t need a 38-ft trawler featuring party lights, a karaoke system, two mini fridges, and rentable hydrofoils in your life? Right, you’re not.

Beautiful 57' Lagoon Sailing Catamaran | Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate’s life for me — take a sailing cruise on this vessel with a trampoline space and available kayaks + paddleboards.

Traffic
  • Expect traffic to be a little backed up this weekend as folks travel for the Fourth of July. Here comes the (population) boom

    Seattle’s population nears 800,000 residents

Wait a minute, who are you? According to an April 1, 2024 estimate from the Washington State Office of Financial Management (OFM), Seattle’s population has grown to just a hair short of 800,000 residents.

Our official estimate rounds us off at 797,700 Seattleites — an ~18,500 increase from 2023 — but what’s a little more interesting is that this number solidifies a new trend for Seattle’s growth. We’re seeing more than 100,000 new residents in the city every decade. Seattle’s population hit 700,000 in 2017 and 600,000 in 2009.

Another notable data point from this population round-up is that Washington also reached the 8 million mark this year. The state said that net migration was the biggest factor in the 84,550-resident increase, accounting for 82% of it. Natural change was responsible for the remaining 18%.

Bake that lasagna — you’ve got some neighbors to meet.

    From the editor
Hi, everyone — it’s my Dad’s birthday tomorrow and I can’t pass the day up without wishing him a happy birthday. If you’d also like to do the same, I will trade you some silly Dad facts for it (inspired by a Dad DND podcast I’ve been loving).

🎂 Every Dad has their specific stream of curse words they yell out when they stub their toe and my dad’s can not be typed out in full (this is my job here), but it went something like “GDMFCSSOB.” You figure it out.

🎂 His least favorite band is the Beach Boys.

🎂 We had a central heating unit while I was growing up, but my Dad chopped firewood all year long so we could use a wood-burning stove to heat our home instead.

🎂 I love him very much and I feel so incredibly thankful to have had such an amazing Dad to help turn me into the person I am today.

City Editor Alina and her Dad sit in a sailboat on Lake Whatcom while her Dad steers the boat. Both are grinning, but Alina has also edited the photo so it looks like her Dad is now also wearing a cartoonish party hat that he was not at the time of the photo.

Look, it’s me and my Dad in Bellingham before either of us moved to Washington.
