    News Notes

    Outdoors
    • Lakewood plans to replace its skate park at Harry Todd Park with its first pickleball court area. The four-court project is estimated to cost $700,000 — half of which will be covered by a state grant. A tentative completion date has been given for spring 2025. (KING 5)
    Award
    • Seattle’s Lowman Beach Park recently received the Best Restored Shore award from the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. The West Seattle park at 7017 Beach Dr. SW underwent extensive restoration work in 2022 to revamp its coastal vegetation, repair the seawall, and enhance its natural features.
    Closing
    • Saks OFF 5th in downtown Seattle is closing, with Saturday, July 20 pegged as its last day. The spin off of Saks Fifth Avenue is still selling its inventory up until then. (Seattle Times)
    Community
    • Bellevue’s Neighborhood Walks are returning this week in three of the city’s neighborhoods — today in West Lake Sammamish, tomorrow in Factoria, and Wednesday, July 17 in West Bellevue. City managers and directors will be present to chat with residents and serve as a guide in the area.
    Environment
    • After reaching a record population count, sockeye salmon are now at risk due to rising river temperatures. Temps in the Okanogan River are above 80 degrees, which creates a thermal barrier preventing sockeye from entering their spawning grounds. Over 250,000 sockeye died under similar conditions in 2015. (Seattle Times)
    Sports
    • The MLB Draft has begun — who do we think the Seattle Mariners will pick next? Speculate with the local experts on the Mariners with Locked On’s daily, team-focused podcasts.
      Finance
      • If your Saturday consisted of mowing the lawn, deep-cleaning the patio, or heading to Home Depot, here’s one more responsible task to add to your to-do list: Move your credit card debt. This card offers 0% interest on a balance transfer until nearly 2026, plus 2% cash back on purchases.*
      Eat
      • Spend more time enjoying your meals than preparing them when you replace your knife + cutting board with the Fullstar Veggie Chopper. It dices, slices, and spiralizes veggies in seconds.*

Two things are true — you love free festival tickets and local nonprofits love volunteers.

Bumbershoot and Amazon are putting two and two together through their new Bumbershoot Gives Back program, which is exchanging 2,000 free festival tickets for volunteer time at local food banks.

To cash in on this deal, sign up at one of seven listed local nonprofits over the summer and boom — you’ll be gushing over the cat circus in no time.

Nonprofits participating in the program include:
      • Asian Counseling & Referral Service
      • North Helpline
      • University District Food Bank
      • Rainier Valley Food Bank
      • Pike Market Senior Center & Food Bank
      • Tilth Alliance
      • Teen Feed
As part of the program, Amazon is also donating 90,000 pounds of food to regional food banks. The first 30,000-pound portion was distributed last week to the Asian Counseling & Referral Service, with the rest to be allotted over the summer.

      From the editor
I did a lot of thinking this weekend and here are some things I feel strongly about.
      1. Outfit repeating is a very normal thing that none of us like to own up to.
      2. If I could be a fruit, I think I would like to be a peach. They’re cute, fun, flirty, but I think they each are holding onto a secret and that’s why they’re so juicy. I want that kind of hot gossip (I’m a journalist after all).
      3. It cannot be as hard as shoe companies make it seem to create a shoe that is both cute and comfortable. I have four blisters right now.
