Class dismissed. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) and the Bellevue School District recently announced that all schools will be closed Friday due to a combination of staffing shortages, COVID-19 measures, and anticipated inclement weather.
With schools closed for Veterans Day already, more than 600 educators requested time off the following day, and there weren’t enough subs to cover those taking leave.
In a statement sent to SEAtoday, SPS said it “does not have the capacity to ensure student safety and high-quality learning” under such conditions. Officials also noted the time off “may offer physical, mental, and emotional restoration” for staffers experiencing fatigue.
While some may welcome a surprise four-day weekend, it’s totally understandable for parents to wonder what’s going on. Pop quiz time.
Are after school activities canceled, too?
Yes to most activities, but athletics will continue on as scheduled. So if your kid has a game on Friday, that should still be a go.
When will the day be made up?
SPS will compensate for the lost time at the end of the school year. Bellevue will have a makeup day on Fri., Jan. 28.
Can kids still get lunch?
Absolutely. Students, parents, and guardians can pick up free sack lunches at these sites on Friday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
What should I do with the extra day off?
So glad you asked — that’s what we’re here for. Family-friendly activities on Friday include:
🐅 WildLanterns at the Woodland Park Zoo: Large-scale scape lanterns represent different habitats around the world.
⚡ PUFFS: Theatrical “Harry Potter” parody explores the adventures of, er, less special talents at a certain school of magic.
🪞The Art of the Disney Costume: This MoPOP exhibit features the ball gowns, capes, and fashion from many beloved characters.
