It’s not easy to find parking for Moby Duck.

Arrrr you excited? The infamous Seafair Pirates are “landing” in Alki on Saturday, July 8, bringing their annual swashbuckling cosplay to the city again.

If you’re a landlubber (or just not familiar with these bucs), the Seafair Pirates are an all-volunteer group of entertainers whose roots go back to 1949. Their goal is to spread some “yo ho, ho” cheer in the community, but the process to joining the crew is involved.

The pirates make their entrance on a ship, and then drive around on a float called the Moby Duck weeks before Seafair. Their arrival on Alki beach is marked by cannon fire and led by the group-appointed Captain Kidd and Davy Jones.

This year, Moby Duck will dock near the Alki Bathhouse before the group plans to raid West Seattle spots like the Benbow Room.

There’s also a scallywag-worthy breakfast open to the public Saturday, July 22 at Brookdale Admiral Heights before the West Seattle Grand Parade. So shiver your timbers — and pancakes.

Gabe is based in Seattle (originally from New Jersey), and has previously been a food writer at Eater, a sports reporter, and a YA graphic novelist. You’ll probably find him scouting out the latest restaurant in town on the weekends, or strolling around the streets of White Center with his feisty pup, Armando.
