Break it down: New sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics

The Paris 2024 Olympics will feature several new + newish sports: breaking, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, and 3x3 basketball. Let’s explore what you need to know about these new events and their rules.

Breaking

Born in the US and dating back to the 1970s, breaking is making its Olympic debut after a resounding success in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Here’s what to know:
  • The three main elements are top rock, down rock, and freeze. Check out how each of these moves are performed.
  • Breakers compete in a 1x1 format, taking alternate turns or “throw-downs” in their routines.
  • Throw-downs will be judged on personality, technique, creativity, variety, performativity, and musicality.
Ready to bust a move? Hip hop yourself over to this spot:

Massive Monkees, Chinatown-International District
This crew has been throwin’ it down since 1999 and is looking ahead to competing in future Olympics. Sounds like it’s time to start training. They offer beginner classes for those giving it a try.

Skateboarding

Skateboarding debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and it seems it’s here to stick. The world’s greatest skateboarders will compete in two disciplines across preliminary and final events: park + street skating.

Park goes down on a course featuring bends + bowls, and Olympians gather speed to get that sweet air.

Street takes place on a straight course with stairs, handrails, and other bells + whistles to make it look like the streets where skateboarding first began.

Ready to ride? Here’s where you can channel your inner Thrasher in Seattle:

If there’s one thing these bars know how to do, it’s commit to the bit — and we’ll cheers to that.

Hop over to these themed Seattle spots for some serious escapism:

Lariat Bar | White Center | An homage to all things wrestling, Lariat features vintage paraphernalia, concession-style food, and even a stage-lit ring.

Inside Passage | Capitol Hill | Beware the sirens — when you walk through the door, you’re entering an underwater world of sunken ships, ambient neon lights, and tropical decor.

Mr. B’s Meadery | Fremont | Vibrant murals and eclectic alleyway seating at this meadery will have you buzzing with delight — we swear it’s not just the alcohol.
Pro tip: Keep an eye out for funny little figures hidden in the bar’s nooks and crannies.

The Octopus Bar | Wallingford | You’ll wanna reel this one in — wooden planks, flotation devices, and heavy corded nets really seal the deal for its seafaring theme.

From the editor
I can’t believe I survived growing up in Oklahoma and Missouri without wearing cowboy boots, just to cave in as soon as I wound up in Seattle.

I blame Chappell Roan and the glam-ification of Western wear.
