All of Washington’s dino-obsessed kiddos now have a new answer to “What’s your favorite dinosaur?”
A bill to make the Suciasaurus rex Washington’s official state dinosaur recently passed in both the state house and senate. It’s on its way to Governor Jay Inslee’s desk for approval.
If you’re wondering why this one — well, know that the Suciasaurus, also known as the Daspletosaurus , represents the first ever dinosaur fossil found in our state. It was discovered on Sucia Island in the San Juans (that name makes sense now, huh?) back in 2012.
In 2019, a fourth grade class from Elmhurst Elementary in Pierce County researching the dinosaur and the process of how a bill becomes a law suggested the legislation to State Representative Melanie Morgan, who has championed the bill ever since.
Once the bill is signed, expect those Elmhurst grade schoolers to boast some serious bragging rights.
