Here’s the thing: No one knows exactly how April 20 became a bonafide cannabis holiday. To clear the smoke, we asked our friends at The Reef Cannabis for their theories about how 4/20 and cannabis became intertwined.

Here were their guesses:

  • A pack of notorious California high schoolers skipping after-school activities to smoke at 4:20 p.m
  • An old police code that indicated a cannabis felony underway
  • Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women 12 and 35” — when multiplied, the numbers equal 420

Whatever its origin, there’s no doubt 4/20 has become an integral part of cannabis culture. Looking to mark the occasion? The Reef is throwing huge 4/20 celebrations in multiple locations across Seattle:

Capitol Hill, 1525 E. Olive Way
