Seattle Public Schools announces four schools set for closure in 2025-26 school year

After a few different plans to fix a $91.5 million budget gap, Seattle Public Schools has announced the four schools it officially intends to close in the 2025-26 school year.

Dunlap School in Rainier Beach is partially obscured by surrounding trees in the foreground, whose branches cover up the top half of the building. The building, composed of white stone and red brick, features a columned entry and a wide, green grass lawn.

Dunlap School was previously one of the schools pegged for closure, but has since been removed from that list.

After receiving criticism from the community about its proposed plans to fix a $91.5 million budget gap, Seattle Public Schools has released a new plan that merges four schools instead of the initial 17+ suggested earlier this fall.

The following schools will close and transfer to the corresponding listed locations:

  • North Beach Elementary will transfer to Viewlands Elementary
  • Stevens Elementary will transfer to Montlake Elementary
  • Sacajawea Elementary will transfer to John Rogers Elementary
  • Sanislo Elementary will transfer to Highland Park Elementary School

These schools were picked for closure because of declining enrollment, building age + safety, regional needs, and assessed impacts on students and family. A plan for the transfer of school programs and new staffing structures has not been released yet.

SPS Superintendent Brent Jones said the closures are intended to help stabilize to school system financially while they work to address the rest of the budget gap.
