Read it and weep — for joy. Not long after beloved Couth Buzzard Books in Greenwood announced it would likely close in April due to financial struggles, the community and its fans stepped up.

A GoFundMe campaign called Save the Couth Buzzard more than doubled its initial goal of $15,000 and has nearly reached a new $50,000 milestone. That’s enough money to cover the shop’s expenses for a while.

Seattleites have long flocked to Couth Buzzard since it opened in 1988.It later moved a few blocks south to its current spot at 8310 Greenwood Ave. with an in-house cafe. It’s a cozy atmosphere for browsing, but the space also hosts yoga classes, community gatherings, and even small concerts.

In fact, there will soon be a private fundraising show with acts that have performed at Couth in the past. The owner is also working on a longer term plan to keep those pages turning for years to come.
