News Notes
Transit
  • New platforms for Seattle’s latest RapidRide bus service are too low for riders using wheelchairs, so King County Metro has installed orange steel plates at three G Line stations. These plates, which raise the buses ~1 inch, are a temporary solution as King County Metro troubleshoots more permanent adjustments. (Seattle Times)
Environment
  • Bering Sea snow crabbing might be canceled for a third year. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists have been monitoring the PNW’s “crabbing crisis” since 2020, when millions of crabs seemingly vanished. They will need to determine if enough crabs have reached maturity. (KING 5)
Open
  • Capitol Hill’s newest space for crafters and coffee lovers opened over the weekend. Stitch Cafe is serving Upright Tree-roasted coffee in its space specifically curated for crocheters + knitters (crafts are encouraged, but not mandatory).
Shop
  • Tomorrow, Oct. 9 Pike Place Market is hosting Harvest Hits, the final installment of the market’s evening shopping series called Produce on Pike. Fresh veggie lovers can find in-season produce, live music, and yummy bites at this event running 3-7 p.m. Can’t make it? We got you.
Community
  • Despite a break-in and a flood in just three days, Easy Street Records is still keeping operations running. The West Seattle shop reported a loss of ~$100,000, which includes the damages of up to 10,000 records. Staff hope that staying open during hard times will help “bring people together.” (KING 5)
Sports
  • Whew — Sunday’s Seahawks game was a doozy. Ending in a 29-20 loss against the New York Giants, the game marks a shift for the team’s season. Keep up with all things Seahawks with KING 5 Sports on X.
Listen
  • What’s on the radar for this year’s NHL season under Coach Dan Bylsma? The local experts are buzzing with anticipation about the Seattle Kraken’s first regular season game — tune in with Locked On’s daily, Kraken-focused podcast.

    • Interested in working with a local tutor — or taking lessons virtually? Wyzant’s vetted instructors can help with 300+ topics, from core subjects to musical skills. The best part? It’s pay-as-you-go and starts as low as $10/session. (Psst... special offer this way.)*
    Finance
    • Credit cards that can help you get out of debt sound as wacky as pumpkin spice deodorant (yes, it’s real). But the concept is legit: Find a card with “0% intro APR” for balance transfers. Here are hands down some of the best offering no interest until 2026.*

Seattle Parks and Rec is planning two new off-leash areas for dogs

In late March, Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) announced West Seattle and Othello as the local sites for off-leash area development. Now, SPR is hosting two community engagement events — one at each site — as designs are finalized.

The Othello Park location has been mapped out to cover ~12,000 sqft in the south end of the park, with the West Seattle Stadium location pegged to be slightly larger at ~16,000 sqft in a currently wooded area.

The current timeline aims to complete designs by spring 2025, start construction by spring 2026, and wrap up in fall 2026.

Penny for your thoughts? Share feedback at these upcoming community events:
    • Wednesday, Oct. 23, 4-6 p.m. — West Seattle Stadium
    • Thursday, Oct. 24, 4-6 p.m. — Othello Playground (the southwest corner of the park)
In the meantime, check out our guide to dog-friendly spaces around Seattle.

    From the editor
Over the weekend, I got to check out the completed Overlook Walk. I can’t wait until next summer — I feel like that’s when the new pedestrian bridge’s potential will really come into play.

A concessionaire space flanked with vendors and hosting public events, markets, you name it... all with its great view of downtown and the Waterfront.
