Let out those devious cackles. Oxford Language‘s recently announced Word of the Year is goblin mode.
Okay, it’s more like a phrase, but it’s defined as “a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.”
That sounds a little negative, but it’s often used in an endearing or humorous way. And it definitely sounds like Seattle. Here’s what we mean.
- Rejecting social norms? That’s our schtick — small talk is a no-no and we lead the charge for societal change .
- Is it laziness or are these gray, rainy days just really, really cozy ?
- It’s impossible to avoid self-indulgence when we’ve got so much great chocolate and long winter nights to sleep.
But greedy? You got us there. We were ranked as the second most generous city in the US last year.
